I met Dr. Ruijuan Liu in October 2012. At that time, I was under the care of my gynecologist/endocrinologist for secondary infertility related to diminished ovarian reserve, inconsistent cycles, and a low antral follicle count. The odds were not in my favor, but my doctor thought that, with some help from Clomid and later Follistim (an injectable medication), I might be able to become pregnant again.

After reading about traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture, I decided to seek help from Dr. Liu. On her website, there were several testimonials from other women who became pregnant under her care; I also liked that she was a member of an Acupuncture Infertility Group and consulted with other doctors around the country. I felt completely at ease in her care and looked forward to my sessions with her; I only wish I could say the same for my gynecologist.

After many devastating months of failed cycles, my period suddenly stopped in January 2013. When Provera did not bring it on, my gynecologist ordered more blood work, revealing that my hormone levels were in a postmenopausal state. I was 34 years old. I sat in disbelief as my doctor suggested hormone replacement therapy for my overall health and the use of a donor egg if I wanted to become pregnant. The next day, I made another appointment to see Dr. Liu and share the news with her.

Dr. Liu did not sugarcoat the blood work results; she agreed that this was not an ideal situation. However, she also felt strongly that the medication, not just my body, had caused my menopausal state. I committed to weekly treatments with her, followed her dietary recommendations, and began taking a series of Chinese herbs. I started to feel like myself again.

In March 2013, my cycles resumed after only a month of treatment. At that time, I also sought another RE for a second opinion. To my surprise, he completely agreed with Dr. Liu's diagnosis of medication-induced menopause and supported our choice not to resume fertility drugs. Instead, he monitored me from the beginning of that first cycle, and—to my surprise—I ovulated, something I had failed to do for over a year.

I continued seeing Dr. Liu and following her advice, feeling better physically and mentally each day. In mid-April, only two months after that terrible diagnosis, I received the best gift of my life: a positive home pregnancy test. There are no words to fully describe that moment, but if you are struggling with infertility, I am sure you can imagine the complete shock and pure joy my husband and I felt. I could not wait to share the news with Dr. Liu.

I continued to see Dr. Liu through my first trimester and took such comfort that my baby and I were in such capable, caring hands. I plan to see her again before and after the birth of the baby, in December 2013.

I am now 22 weeks along, and each day I know how lucky I am to be where I am, thanks to Dr. Liu. For anyone else who is considering acupuncture, I am a true believer that it works. Dr. Liu changed my life, and for that I am deeply and forever grateful.

In 2007, when I moved from Georgia to Pennsylvania, my Chinese acupuncturist referred me to Dr. Jane Liu for follow-up care during my very early pregnancy. Dr. Liu helped me with acupuncture to maintain hormonal balance and avoid another miscarriage. After four years of miscarriage and infertility, I was finally able to give birth to a healthy baby. My husband and I had been trying to become pregnant since I delivered my son, who was then four years old. I never thought it would be so difficult to become pregnant again.
